Face: ask them to smile — does one side droop? Arms: ask them to raise both arms — does one drift down? Speech: ask them to repeat a simple sentence — is it slurred? Time: if any are abnormal, call 911 immediately.
Clot-busting drugs only work within a narrow window from symptom onset. The time of onset is the single most important fact you can give the ER.
Help them sit or lie down with the head and shoulders slightly elevated. Loosen tight clothing.
If they become unresponsive and stop breathing, begin CPR. If they vomit, turn them onto their side (recovery position) to keep the airway clear.
Reassure calmly. Do not let them drive themselves or be driven by family — paramedics can begin treatment en route.
