AED (defibrillator) use

AEDs talk you through every step out loud. You cannot shock someone who doesn't need it — the device decides. Just turn it on and listen.
Serious — call 911 if in doubt

  2. 2.Send someone for the nearest AED
  3. 3.Turn it on, follow the voice
  4. 4.Bare, dry chest — apply pads

Steps

5 steps

  1. 1

Call 911 and get the AED

Send someone for the nearest AED while you start CPR. Most public buildings, gyms, and airports have one.

  2. 2

Turn it on and follow voice prompts

Power button is usually large and obvious. The device will speak each step.

Tip: Modern AEDs cannot deliver an unnecessary shock. Trust it.
  3. 3

Place the pads on bare, dry skin

One pad upper right chest, one pad lower left side. Diagrams are printed on the pads. Cut or rip away clothing; dry the chest if wet.

Important: Remove medication patches and wipe residue. Do not place pads over a pacemaker bump — offset by 1 inch.
  4. 4

Stand clear when it analyzes and shocks

Make sure no one is touching the person. Loudly say 'Clear!' Press shock if prompted.

  5. 5

Resume CPR immediately after the shock

Continue 30 compressions to 2 breaths until paramedics arrive or the person wakes.
