Sunburn

Sunburn often hurts more the next day than right now. Acting tonight will protect you from the worst of it.

For children:

  • Step 4Hydrate: Infants under 6 months: keep completely out of direct sun. Never apply sunscreen to them — keep covered. Children burn faster than adults at all ages.
Steps

5 steps

  1. 1

    Get out of the sun

Move to shade or indoors immediately. UV damage continues through clouds if you stay outside.

  2. 2

Cool the skin with damp cloths

Apply cool (not cold or ice) damp compresses to burned areas. Or take a cool shower or bath.

Tip: A cup of baking soda or colloidal oatmeal added to a cool bath is very soothing for widespread sunburn.
  3. 3

    Apply aloe vera generously

Aloe vera gel — from a plant or commercial product without alcohol or fragrance — is the most effective OTC treatment. Apply generously and reapply every few hours.

Important: Avoid products with benzocaine, lidocaine, or petroleum jelly on fresh sunburns. They can trap heat, mask pain, or trigger reactions.
  4. 4

    Hydrate

Sunburn pulls fluid to the skin surface and dehydrates the body. Drink significantly more water than usual for the next 24 to 48 hours.

  5. 5

    Pain relief and healing

Ibuprofen reduces both pain and inflammation. Don't pop or pick blisters — they protect skin underneath.

Important: See a doctor for: blistering over large areas, fever above 103°F (39.4°C), severe chills, extreme pain, or confusion. These signs together indicate sun poisoning — a medical emergency.
